Crafting - Full Guide

Author: Razor / In Guides

Crafting is a very important part of Black Desert. It allows you to produce a lot of useful things. For example, the best gear in the game can be obtained from crafting. Crafting also plays an important role during preparation for sieges. Siege weaponry (cannons, ladders, barricades, and artillery) can’t be purchased but can be created by players.

It’s also very interesting because the system contains certain sandbox elements. You will have to manage your houses, workers, caravans and so on. It looks like developers implemented RTS elements into the game. You will have to dedicate some time to this, but it'll be fun doing it.

Crafting

This guide contains the latest information about producing items in Black Desert. It’s not the final version and it will be updated after we collect more data. As is, this guide is the largest you can find on the internet.

Houses

A House is a basic object for a serious crafter because all workers live there and crafting stations are also located there. Moreover, you will also have a warehouse where resources and materials will be stored. Every serious businessman should start by finding a house.

The crafting system in Black Desert Online requires players to rent several houses. That’s because different houses allow you to produce different materials from resources. For example, if you want to produce wood out of logs you will have to rent a house that allows it. For more information read our Housing Guide

Crafting Stations

If you have a house, you can purchase a crafting station and place it inside the house to use it anytime. Right now you can set up Cooking and Alchemy crafting stations. You can purchase a Cooking station from furniture traders and Alchemy station from Alchemists. Both NPCs can be found in any city.

NOTE: you can use these 2 crafting stations yourself, meaning you can enter the house and use the station directly. Other professions will require hiring workers and upgrading your house. You will find more information about this below.

Gathering

In order to craft you have to gather resources. There are 6 gathering professions in Black Desert but you are not required to learn the professions. All you need to begin gathering is to purchase special instruments, with each profession requiring different equipment. But your instruments will not serve you forever. Each instrument has a durability scale and you won't be able to use it if it’s broken. It’s also impossible to repair, so you must purchase another one.

List of Instruments

Pick Pick – Used for gathering metal ores, stone and crystals.
Axe Axe – Used for gathering wood. After you get the wood from a tree it becomes inactive and it is impossible to use this tree for a period of time.
Hoe Hoe – Used for finding different roots and plants.
Leatherworker’s Knife Leatherworker’s Knife – Used for getting Leather from animals.
Knife Knife – Used for getting meat and bones.
Syringe Syringe – Used for gathering blood of killed monsters and tree sap.

It’s also possible to gather some resources without items: for example different fruits and berries.

You also need special points in order to gather. If you run out of the points you can’t gather resources from nodes. Don't worry though, these points recover over time and the recovery speed is very fast, so you wont be faced with a lack of points in the beginning.

It usually takes 20 seconds to gather from one node. You can decrease gathering time by mastering the profession or purchasing better equipment / instruments.

Different regions in BD are rich with different resources. For example, you can find a lot of stone in one region and pine-trees in another region. You will have to travel a lot and probably choose to rent houses in different regions. This distribution of resources will also stimulate players to trade.

Workers

You are not required to gather all resources yourself. It’s possible to hire a special worker who will help you with gathering and producing. This will save you a lot of time. Workers are also required for other crafting professions like Blacksmithing, Woodworking and Jewel crafting.

You will not find another MMO game where you can hire workers. This feature is very interesting and unique.

How to hire?

  • First of all make sure you have a free bed in your house. Your worker will live and rest there.
  • Then you need to purchase a license from a special trader
  • Send the worker to gather resources on your farm / node.

The number of available workers depends on the number of “beds” you have in your house. The more beds you have the more workers you can hire.

NOTE: Workers will store all resources into your bank. Make sure you have enough free space there.

It’s great to have workers, but they will NOT do all the work for you. They can gather only specific resources. There are 3 types of gathering nodes for your workers: mines, forests and fields (farms) and you can send them to these nodes only. It means that you will also have to participate in gathering process. Sometimes you will have to take instruments and search for resources yourself. For example if you need Leather you will have to go to the forest and hunt, your workers can’t produce leather.

Workshops

In Black Desert you can’t craft items from Blacksmithing, Woodworking, and Jewelry directly. You will have to hire workers and upgrade your house to a workshop. Each house can be upgraded to a Workshop. A Workshop is a place where your workers can craft different types of items, depending on the type of the workshop.

There are 4 types of workshops:

Woodworking Workshop Woodworking Workshop - All items made of wood: furniture, wooden weapons, tools and so on.
Blacksmithing Workshop Blacksmithing Workshop – All items made of steel: armor and weapon, tools.
Jewel Crafting Workshop Jewel Crafting Workshop – All types of jewelry, weapon upgrades.
Trading Workshop Trading Workshop – All other items used in trading.

Note, you can’t craft in the workshop yourself. You can only select an item you would like to create and send your worker to complete crafting. After the work is complete you will be able to take the finished item from your warehouse.

The mechanics of crafting in Black Desert differs from what you see in other MMO games. Your hero doesn’t craft items himself, he has to hire specialists.

Workshops can also be upgraded. An upgrade increases the quality of the items you produce and increases the assortment of available items.

Waypoints

Waypoints connect different places in Black Desert. If you look at the map you will see that all big towns are connected with roads and there are several waypoints on each road. You need to activate all the waypoints between 2 cities in order to activate a trade route. But waypoints are not about trading only. For example you need to activate all the waypoints between your gathering node and city in order to send your worker to the node.

You can unlock waypoints using your “Reputation”. You get Reputation during leveling.

Tips

  • If you can’t gather resources check the amount of points you have and durability of your instruments.
  • If your workers are not going to farm/node check your bank, maybe it's full.
  • If you can’t hire new workers you need to activate a new bed in your house.
  • If you are looking for a specific tree don’t forget about the climate. Some trees only grow in specific climate zones.
  • Your workers are bounded to the region. They work only in the region of their city.

As you can see the crafting system in Black Desert is unusual. It's not just about farming nodes and producing items. The system contains sandbox elements and you have to manage a lot of processes yourself. It feels more like you are a manager of a big factory. There is no other MMO game with such mechanics thats why many players say that it is the best crafting system ever!
